K–12 Education (2010–2011)

The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) and The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) at Berkeley developed an outreach program on earthquake engineering available to local K–12 schools. The activities of the program include classroom presentations, participation in demonstrations and a tour of the experimental facilities.

In the classroom presentations, students are introduced to earthquake engineering concepts and earthquake safety. Students are given the opportunity to design, build and test building models made from K'nex (plastic snap together building sections), on a small shaking table.

The tour includes a visit to the Earthquake Simulator Laboratory and the Hybrid Experimental Test Facility. Students will also watch videos of tests performed in the laboratories and see some of the old damaged test specimens.
