K-12 Education

The Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC) and The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) at Berkeley have developed an outreach program on earthquake engineering available to local K - 12 schools. The activities of the program include class room presentations, participation in demonstrations and a tour of the experimental facilities.

In the class room presentations, students are introduced to earthquake engineering concepts and earthquake safety. Students are given the opportunity to build and test structures on a small shake table using different materials such as K’nex (plastic snap together building sections), poster paper and or metal.

The tours will include a visit to the Earthquake Simulator Laboratory and the recently developed Hybrid Experimental Test Facility. Students will watch videos of tests performed in the laboratories including a special segment produced for NBC Dateline to demonstrate the dangers of common house hold furnishings during an earthquake.
