National Student Leadership Conference
Engineering Section Summer 2006
The NEES lab, along with other Berkeley Engineering groups, provided educational activities for high school students attending a National Student Leadership Conference (NLSC) Engineering Program in the Bay Area. The activities at our lab centered around Earthquake Engineering. Three 11-day conferences were held in the June and July, each for a separate group of about 45 high school students.

Activities
Activities at the nees@berkeley Equipment Site included:
- Wood Panel Shear Wall Testing
Construction Station
The graduate student leaders give a short lecture on the construction of small-scale wood shear walls. They also discuss safety tips regarding the construction equipment the students will use. Students build 48-inch square panels in groups of five students. The panels are constructed with specific nail spacings and we expect these tests will show the panels have different strengths due to the different nail spacings.
Testing Station
The graduate student leaders give a short lecture on seismic testing. Students will particpate in testing their wood panels using monotonic testing. The results of all the different panels will be compared through comparative graphs of the test data.
- Axial Testing of Concrete and Wood
Axial Test Station
The graduate student leaders give a short lecture on stress, strain, modulus of elasticity and material testing. The group will conduct two tests on concrete cylinders, two tests on wood prisms parallel to the wood grain, and two tests on wood prisms perpendicular to the wood grain.
