Hybrid Simulation Workshop
February 2122, 2008
UC Berkeley, Richmond Field Station, nees@berkeley Equipment Site
The workshop is full. Registration is closed. Workshops have been offerred in December and April. Check back at this website for announcements in the preceding months.
Hybrid simulation is a set of methods for examining the seismic response of structures using a hybrid model comprised of both physical and numerical sub-structures. This workshop on hybrid simulation is for NEES researchers, both current and future. Attendees will:
- Learn the basics of hybrid simulation methods.
- Learn about OpenSees, OpenFresco and Navigator, our basic tools.
- Conduct a hybrid simulation at the nees@berkeley NEES Equipment Site.
- Be able to use hybrid simulation in their NEES and non-NEES projects.
- Be prepared to develop new hybrid simulation tests and algorithms.
We will review the basics of hybrid simulation, including similitude requirements for model design, model implementation including integration methods, and simulation result interpretation. Then, we will demonstrate how hybrid simulation is implemented at nees@berkeley using our hardware with OpenSees and OpenFresco software. The attendees will have a unique opportunity to develop a hybrid model and, with the help of our staff, implement and run a hybrid simulation at nees@berkeley. Throughout the workshop we will demonstrate how to use the nees@berkeley Equipment Site hardware and software portfolio and how to process and archive hybrid simulation data.

Registration
Workshop registration.
The workshop fee is $50. Included in this fee are local transportation and refreshments. You may pay with a credit card at the time you complete the form or indicate that you will bring a check or cash on the first day of the workshop.
Limited travel support is available for graduate students, young post-doctoral researchers and tenure-track faculty at US schools in accordance with NSF and NEESinc policies. To receive reimbursement for your airline travel, you must comply with the Fly America Act (use a US flag carrier). See this brief Frequently Asked Questions document or investigate the NSF Award and Administration Guidelines or examine the UC Bulletin G-28 (Policy and Regulations Governing Travel). Travel expenses for anyone already receiving NEESinc funds (e.g. Operations or IT Managers, PIs, co-PIs, technicians, NEESIT or NEESinc employees, etc.) cannot be reimbursed. However, travel expenses for NEESR awardees and their team members, unless they are also on the NEESinc payroll, can be reimbursed.
Logistics
The workshop will be held at the nees@berkeley Equipment Site located at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station (http://nees.berkeley.edu). We recommend the Hotel Durant and will provide transportation from the hotel to the Richmond Field Station. Accommodations
We are negotiating a group rate at the Hotel Durant. You will need to make your own reservations for overnight accommodations. These rooms will be held until January 22. Call the hotel to make reservations at 1-800-238-7268 and identify yourself as attending the “NEES hybrid simulation workshop” and the confirmation #: H40000 to get the UCB rate. You will still be able to get the discount after January 22 if rooms are available. We will provide transportation between the hotel and the Richmond Field Station or you could take the UC Berkeley Bear Transit service.
For other accommodation arrangements, consider UC Berkeley's list of local, recommended hotels.
Transportation
- We will provide transportation between the Hotel Durant and the Richmond Field Station.
- If you will be driving to the facility, here are maps and directions to the Richmond Field Station.
- Parking at the Richmond Field Station costs $0.50 per day. We will provide daily parking permits, ask for one when you check in at the workshop.
- Public Transportation: take Bay Area Rapid Transportation (BART) to Downtown Berkeley. Exit the BART station and board the RFS Line shuttle (operated by UC Berkeley Bear Transit service). The Berkeley BART main station is located on Shattuck Avenue adjacent to Center Street. Come up and out of the station onto the sidewalk on Shattuck Avenue. Walk across Cross Center Street and turn left. Look for Bear Transit signage at the bus stop. Morning Northbound (to RFS) departure times from this stop are 7:42am (arrive 8:00am), and 9:17am (arrive 9:35am), and at 10:17am (arrive 10:35am).
