Hybrid Simulation Workshop
January 2627, 2009
UC Berkeley, Richmond Field Station, nees@berkeley Equipment Site
This event is now completed. The workshop is held twice a year. Check back at this website for announcements about upcoming workshops.
Course Description
Hybrid simulation is an experimental method for examining the seismic response of structures using a hybrid model comprised of both physical and numerical sub-structures. This workshop on hybrid simulation, is for NEES researchers, both current and future. Attendees will:- Learn the basics of the hybrid simulation method.
- Learn about OpenSees, OpenFresco and Navigator, our basic tools.
- Conduct a hybrid simulation at the nees@berkeley NEES Equipment Site.
- Be able to use hybrid simulation in their NEES and non-NEES projects.
- Prepare to develop new hybrid simulation tests and algorithms.
We will review the basics of hybrid simulation, including similitude requirements for model design, model implementation including integration methods, and simulation result interpretation. Then, we will demonstrate how hybrid simulation is implemented at nees@berkeley using our hardware and OpenSees and OpenFresco software. The attendees will have a unique opportunity to develop a hybrid model and, with the help of our staff, implement and run a hybrid simulation at nees@berkeley. We will also demonstrate how to use the nees@berkeley Equipment Site hardware and software portfolio and how to process and archive hybrid simulation data.
See the workshop agenda for additional information about content and activities.
Application Procedure
Please apply using the online registration form by January 15, 2009. A $50 workshop fee, to cover the handouts, local transportation and workshop meals, will be collected at the beginning of the workshop. We are not able to accept credit card payments at this time. Bring a check (payable to The Regents of the University of California) on the first day of the workshop. The workshop dinner will be held on UC Berkeley Campus.
Travel
Limited travel support may be available for graduate students, young post-doctoral researchers and tenure-track faculty at US schools. To receive reimbursement for airline travel, you must comply with the Fly America Act (use a US flag carrier). See our travel support policy webpage for detailed requirements to qualify for reimbursment of travel expenses.Logistics
The workshop will be held at the nees@berkeley Equipment Site located at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station. Maps and directions are available on the website. We recommend staying at the Hotel Durant. We will provide transportation between the Hotel Durant and the Richmond Field Station.
Location
The workshop will be held at the nees@berkeley Equipment Site located at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station.

Accommodations
We recommend the Hotel Durant. We were not able to arrange for a special rate with the Hotel Durant this workshop session. We will provide transportation from the Hotel Durant to the Richmond Field Station.
For other accommodations, we suggest you consult the UC Berkeley list of local accommodations to find information about hotels and motels in the area.
Transportation
We will provide transportation between the Hotel Durant and the Richmond Field Station. Here is some information about transportation alternatives.
Driving. Maps and directions to the Richmond Field Station are available from the website.
Parking at the Richmond Field Station costs $0.50 per day. We will provide daily parking permints. Ask for one when you check-in at the workshop.
Public Transportation. The Richmond Field Station is not well served by public transportation. The UC Berkeley Parking and Transportation unit operates the RFS Line shuttle between the main campus in Berkeley and the field station in Richmond. This may be used as described below.
Take the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train to the Downtown Berkeley station. Exit the BART station and board the RFS Line shuttle. The BART station is located on Shattuck Avenue adjacent to Center Street. Come up out of the station onto the sidewalk on Shattuck Avenue. Walk across Center Street and turn left. Look for Bear Transit signage at that bus stop area (a couple bus lengths down). Morning Northbound (to RFS) departure times from this stop are 7:42 AM (arrive 8:00 AM), 9:17 AM (arrive 9:35 AM), and 10:17 AM (arrive 10:35 AM).
